How Long Does a Kitchen Installation Take?

A stage-by-stage look at kitchen installation times, what commonly causes delays and what to prepare before your fitter arrives.

There is no single installation time that fits every kitchen. A simple replacement using the existing layout can move quickly, while a renovation involving new services, plastering, flooring or specialist worktops can take considerably longer.

Useful benchmark: UK industry cost guides commonly use around two working weeks as a reference point for an average kitchen fit, but the complete project can take longer when several trades and drying or fabrication stages are involved.

The stages that affect the programme

1. Removal and preparation

The old kitchen may need to be removed before the condition of walls, floors and services is fully visible. Repairs, plastering or levelling can add time but are often important for a good final installation.

2. Plumbing, electrics and gas

Moving sinks, appliances, sockets or lighting can require specialist trades before cabinets are fitted. Gas work should be planned with an appropriately registered engineer.

3. Cabinet installation

Once the room is ready, units can be assembled, levelled, fixed and aligned. The number of cabinets, tall housings, decorative panels and bespoke details all affect the fitting time.

4. Worktops and finishing

Laminate or timber worktops may often be fitted during the main installation. Stone and other templated surfaces can introduce a separate measuring, fabrication and return-installation stage.

5. Appliances and final trades

Appliances, plumbing connections, electrical work, splashbacks, decorating and final adjustments complete the project.

Common causes of kitchen delays

  • Missing, damaged or incorrect units and panels
  • Late appliance or worktop deliveries
  • Unexpected wall, floor, plumbing or electrical problems
  • Trades booked in the wrong sequence
  • Design changes after installation has started
  • Restricted property access or building-management requirements

What to prepare before installation

Have the final plan available, check deliveries against the order, confirm appliance specifications and make sure the fitter knows about access, parking and any building restrictions. See our project process or browse kitchen services in London to identify the trades your project may require.
